Yankees 1975 Old Timer's Day and Billy Martin I Arrives, 1975-8-2
(Warning: Original video was recorded via Cartravision and is of lesser quality) Billy Martin arrives for his initial stint as NYY manager on this Yankee Old Timer's Day, 1975 at Shea Stadium. Prior to the festivities commencing, Phil Rizzuto interviews Martin and Gabe Paul, Frank Messer interviews Gil MacDougald, and Bill White interviews Willie Mays (catch Mays totally misunderstanding Frank Messer's introduction). Messer emcees and handles the Old Timer intros (Joe DiMaggio is none too happy that Martin is introduced last instead of him!). Mel Allen is on the field to call the Old Timer's game (this is also Joe DiMaggio's final appearance in an Old Timer's Game).

Phil Rizzuto 1974-8-24 Phil Freaks Over Six Lightning Bolts At Shea (Audio only from WMCA Radio)
Просмотров 8 тыс.2 года назад
YanksAtShea brings you an exciting bottom of the sixth inning at Shea Stadium on Saturday August 24, 1974 when the Yankees go ahead of the California Angels during an muggy afternoon game. What makes it more exciting is the sheer terror Phil Rizzuto expresses during his excellent call of the game when six separate bolts of late August lightning bounce around Shea. Phil was a much better play-by...

Too many long nights followed by rough days and too many injuries robbed The Mick of his potential. He could have been Ruth and DiMaggio combined. But even still, my fellow Oklahoma boy did pretty good for himself.

Watch Yaz, at 2:28 he looks up because he thinks it's high off of the wall and he'll have to play it off of the wall. At 2;30 he sees that the ball just made it into the net. Yaz has played thousands of balls off of the The Green Monster for 18 years...at 2:30 his body language tells you everything. He buckles like he can't believe it. That's an out in 95% of the ballparks in Major League baseball.

Anybody who loved Roger should read "Roger Maris: Baseball's Reluctant Hero". The constant stress, the unkind writers, and brutal fans brought tears to my eyes throughout my reading. Roger was once up to smoking 5 packs of unfiltered cigarettes per day, which, no doubt, led to his lymphoma. His class throughout his career, and in his last days are lessons from which we can all learn. Roger was a great man, teammate, and ballplayer who deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.

Red Barber and Mel Allen were working the TV side, while Phil Rizzuto was on the radio. Rizzuto did a much better job than Barber / Allen. He went nuts, and the fans always loved that. I believe Rizzuto was more connected to the Yankees, being a former Allstar shortstop. In any case, it was great to see Roger Maris hit #61 again! Thanks for posting!
